With the threat of a very tangible British presence, five militia companies formed in St. James Parish of Southern Anne Arundel County over the next few weeks. In July of 1813, Joshua Barney began building a U.S. Navy. As soon as this new fleet was completed at the beginning of the following summer, in May of 1814, it sailed from Baltimore and down the Patuxent to stave off the British. Meanwhile, the local militia in the "Great Swamp" of Herring Creek were making their own preparations...
