ACT, Inc. is happy to announce a new award this year (sponsored by Mrs. Harold West and Christine West Cataldo), The Westy Award - an award in memory of Harold Raymond West Jr. (“Westy,” 1919-2009) and given to recognize an exceptional archaeology/preservation student volunteer or intern. Harold West was an avocational archaeologist and Broadneck native, who discovered the Burle site of the Providence settlement and supported archaeological excavations there by County archaeologists.
This year, The Westy Award recognizes Luc Renaux, a high school intern who devoted hundreds of hours to lab and fieldwork through the County’s archaeology and preservation volunteer program (established through partnerships with Anne Arundel County Trust for Preservation, the County’s Cultural Resources Division, and the Lost Towns Project) and independently conducted successful research projects on artifact assemblages found by recent excavations.
